PRAMBANAN TEMPLE
Roro Jonggrang was a very beautiful
princess from a Javanese kingdom, Prambanan Kingdom hundred years ago. Her
famous beauty was known throughout the country, and princes from far and
different land and kingdoms came to propose her. However, her beauty didn’t
make her humble, instead she grew her arrogance even more. She refused all proposal,
and sometime in harsh as well. Many returned brokenhearted.
There was a famous prince by that era,
Prince Bandung Bondowoso. He was famous by his strength, power, and good
looking. He owned a big kingdom with a thousand of soldiers. He too heard of
Roro Jonggrang’s amazing beauty that he set up to the kingdom to propose her.
Having heard that Prince Bondowoso was
coming to marry her, Roro Jonggang grew worried. She disliked the idea of
getting married, however, she too understood the consequence if she refused the
proposal. She knew that Bondowoso had thousands of soldiers that could attack
her kingdom if she disappointed him. So when Bondowoso arrived and proposed
her, she was willing to accept it with one condition.
Bondowoso had to make her 1000 temples
in one night time. If he failed, then Roro Jonggrang would not marry him. Now,
Bondowoso was not only strong, he had thousands of men working for him, and not
only men, he owned the power to control the genies as well. He agreed to
fulfill Jonggrang’s wish and started to work it immediately. He used his power
to call all the genies and asked them to keep on working until they completed
1000 temples by the time the rooster crowed the next morning.
The genies worked without stop any
second. They would only stop by the time the rooster crowed. Soon hundreds of
temples were completed. This made Roro Jonggrang restless. She could not sleep
or even closed her eyes. She tried to think any way to fail Bondowoso. Finally,
she got an idea. She cut paper in the shape of a circle and glued it in front
of a candle holder. She lit the candle and carried it to the chicken coop where
the rooster slept. When the rooster saw the candle, it thought that it was
almost dawn and the sun was going to rise soon. The rooster quickly got up and
in a second, it crowed.
The working genies heard the rooster
and thought that the morning had come. Instantly, they stopped working and
disappeared leaving the undone temples. There were 999 temples that completed.
One more to be built. Bondowoso was disappointed to see this. He was very mad.
When he found out that it was the work of Roro Jonggrang, he came to her and
cursed her into a stone.
Uptill now, we can still see the
statue of Princess Roro Jonggrang in one of those temples that Bondowoso built
for her. The temples are now named Prambanan.

SURABAYA
A
long time ago in East Java there were two strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura
was a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Actually, they were
friends. But when they were hungry, they were very greedy. They did not want to
share their food. They would fight for it and never stop fighting until one of
them gave up.
It
was a very hot day. Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya
saw a goat. “Yummy, this is my lunch,”
said Baya.
“No way! This is my lunch. You
are greedy! I had not eaten for two days!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. After several hours, they were very tired.
Sura had a plan to stop their bad behavior.
“I’m tired of fighting, Baya,”
said Sura.
“Me too. What should we do to
stop fighting? Do you have any idea?” asked Baya.
“Yes, I do. Let’s share our territory. I live in the water, so I look for food
in the sea. And you live on the land, right? So, you look for the food also on
the land. The border is the beach, so we will never meet again. Do you agree?”
asked Sura.
“Hmm... let me think about it.
OK, I agree. From today, I will never go to the sea again. My place is on the
land,” said Baya.
Then
they both lived in the different places. But one day, Sura went to the land and
looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much
food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise.
“Hey, what are you doing here?
This is my place. Your place is in the sea!”
“But, there is water in the
river, right? So, this is also my place!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought
again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing
to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up. He went back to the sea.
Baya was very happy. He had his place again.
The place where they were
fighting was a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then always talked about the
fight between Sura and Baya. They then named the place of the fight as

Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live
hard with his mother.
Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent,
and strong child. He usually went to the sea to catch fish, and brought it to
his mother, or sold it in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was
sailing as usual, he saw a merchant's ship which was being raided by a small
band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates.
The merchant was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin
Kundang agreed.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became
a wealthy merchant, with a huge ship, loads of trading goods, many ship crews,
and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The villagers
recognized him, and the news ran fast in the town: Malin Kundang became a rich
man and now he is here. His mother, in sadness after years of loneliness, ran
to the beach to meet her beloved son again.
When the mother came, Malin Kundang,
in front of his well dressed wife, his crews and his own glory, denied to meet
that old, poor and dirty woman. For three times she begged Malin Kundang and
for three times yelled at him. At last Malin Kundang said to her "Enough,
old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly peasant!"
Then he ordered his crews to set sail.
Enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that
he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed
and set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a

cucumber seed to grow a child and when the child grew up, they had to give the

they were looking for a way to break the promise.
In the afternoon, the giant came to their house. He wanted to take Timun Mas as

away.
“Why I have to run away?” Timun Mas asked.

THE LION

A Lion was sleeping peacefully when he
was woken by something running up and down his back and over his face. Pretending
to be still asleep, the Lion slowly opened one eye and saw that it was a little
mouse.
With lightening speed the Lion reached
out and caught the little mouse in one of his large paws. He dangled it by its
tail and roared, “I’m the King of Beasts! You’ll pay with your life for showing
me such disrespect.”
The Lion held the little mouse over
his huge open jaws and prepared to swallow it.
“Please, please don’t eat me, Mr. King
of Beasts, Sir,” squeaked the mouse. “If you forgive me this time and let me go
I’ll never, never forget it.”
“I may be able to do you a good turn
in the future to repay your kindness,” it squeaked.
“You, do me a favor!” roared the Lion
with laughter. “That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.”
Still laughing, the Lion put the mouse
down on the ground and said; “You’ve made me laugh so much I can’t eat you now.
Go on, off you go before I change my mind.”
The little mouse scurried away as fast
as its little legs could go. Not long after this the Lion was caught in a trap
by some hunters. They tied him to a tree with rope while they went to get their
wagon. The little mouse was nearby and came when he heard the mighty Lion’s
roar for help. The mouse gnawed the rope with his sharp teeth and set the Lion
free.
“I know you didn’t believe me, but I
told you I could help you one day,” squeaked the little mouse. “Even a little

boasting how clever he was.

of tricks to choose from if my enemies try to capture me.”
“I’m afraid I’ve only got one trick, but it has always worked for
me” The cat said timidly.
The fox looked at the cat and shook his head “One trick, how dumb
is that? I’ve got hundreds of ways of escaping” said the fox.
“I still think it’s better to have one trick that works than waste
time trying to choose from a dozen that might” said the cat softly.
“Rubbish” shouted the fox. “You’re just not as smart as me”
Just then they heard a pack of dogs barking as they coming towards
them. The cat immediately ran up the nearest tree and hid on one of the highest
branches.
“That’s my trick” the cat called from high up in the tree. “You
had better reach into that bag of tricks of yours and choose one right now or
you're history”
“Ok, Ok, stay calm” said the fox to himself.
“Should I run and hide behind the nearest hedge? Or should I jump
down a burrow?”
The dogs were getting closer and closer.
“Down a burrow that’s the way to go” said the fox, and started
running around the field looking for a burrow.
“No, that one’s too small, I can’t get down far enough. This one’s
too big, they could get down too. Maybe that one over there?”
Too late. While the fox wasted time, confused by so many choices,
the dogs caught him and killed him.The cat looked down sadly and said, “It’s

"Sara!" her mom yelled. "What are you doing? You know to do your
chores right when you get home! And you're late!"
"Coming, Mom!" Sara yelled, getting up and stomping towards the
kitchen. "What?" she snapped as her mother gave her a stern look,
annoyed.
"You'd better straighten up your attitude, young lady," her mom
warned, "or you'll be grounded."
"Whatever." Sara began to throw around the dishes in the sink, trying
to make as much noise as she possibly could. A plate cracked and cut her hand.
Sara cursed.
"Sara!" her mom exclaimed. "How dare you use that language! Go
to your room!"
"No!" Sara yelled, throwing down the towel she was using to wipe the
blood off her hand.
"Do you want to say 'no' one more time and see what happens?" her mom
asked. She looked furious.
"Sure," Sara said sarcastically. "No."
"How dare you!" Her mother slapped her.
Sara shrank back, staring incredulously at her mom. She had never hit Sara
before.
"I HATE YOU!" Sara screamed before running out of the house.
"Sara, get back here!" her mom yelled, running after her.

scream. She turned around, hoping that it wouldn't be what she thought it would
be....
